Prior to co-founding True North, Dr. Timothy McLarney and Richard Sarles served for many years as the Director of Research and Associate Research Director, respectively, at another California-based survey research firm. During their tenure at that firm, they were instrumental in expanding the firm's size and capabilities to the point where the firm conducted more than 100 studies per year for a wide variety of public and private sector clients. With this growth, however, came the unfortunate tension that is found in most mid to large sized research firms: although clients can potentially benefit from the broad experience and expertise of a larger firm, in many cases the sheer number of projects needed to sustain a large firm requires many important aspects of a research project to be delegated to individuals behind the scenes who often do not have the desired experience, expertise, or familiarity with the project.

Dr. McLarney and Mr. Sarles envisioned a company that would combine the best characteristics of small and large research firms. It would offer the experience and expertise found at ‘big firms’ and typically missing from small firms. It would also provide the level of attention to client services, interest in a client’s needs, and a competitive pricing structure typically found in smaller ‘boutique’ firms. With this operating philosophy in mind, True North Research was founded.

So what makes True North different? In a word: quality. By focusing on fewer projects per year and personally managing every aspect of every project, Dr. McLarney and Mr. Sarles are able to provide superior quality research and client services at very competitive rates.
