Timothy McLarney, Ph.D.
President

As President of True North, Dr. McLarney is responsible for the design, management and analysis of each project. Dr. McLarney's work to date has provided California cities, counties, special jurisdictions, transportation planning agencies, councils of government, school districts, corporations, non-profit organizations and political campaigns with research to address their often complex marketing, planning and/or policy needs. In the past five years alone, Dr. McLarney has occupied a key role in approximately 300 research studies with collective budgets in excess of $5,000,000.

Dr. McLarney is a recognized expert in survey research methodology, sampling theory, weighting and the use of statistical methods to generalize survey results. His research has been recognized at numerous national and state conferences, and has earned him honors including the title of Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley. He has also served as an independent expert witness in survey research methodology for California legal cases.

Prior to founding True North Research, Dr. McLarney was the Director of Research at another California-based survey research firm and a consultant for Quest, which provides organizational development training and consulting. Dr. McLarney holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University with an emphasis in survey research methodology, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Richard Sarles, M.S.
Principal Researcher

Co-founder and Principal Researcher at True North, Mr. Sarles is also a recognized expert in sampling, weighting, data processing, and statistical analysis. Prior to co-founding True North, Mr. Sarles was employed as Associate Research Director at another California-based survey research firm. In his tenure at that firm he managed more than 100 projects for a wide variety of clients including Fortune 500 companies, cities, counties, special districts, councils of government, local and regional planning agencies, and non-profit organizations. With six years experience designing and conducting studies in public, corporate, academic, and work environments, Mr. Sarles possesses a broad understanding of human behavior, perception, and motivation that he brings to every project.

A published author, Mr. Sarles received his M.S. in Experimental Psychology from Illinois State University with magna cum laude honors. He also received his B.S. in Psychology from Illinois State University with summa cum laude honors.
